BC Transit is committed to environmental responsibility in the planning, operating and maintenance of regional transportation services.  We are uniquely positioned to help reduce the impacts of the transportation of people throughout BC. With this in mind, BC Transit is committed to:

  • The BC Government's Climate Action Plan goal of reducing emission by 33% by 2020
  • Meeting or exceeding all requirements of environmental regulations
  • Continuing to develop and maintain an Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Identifying environmental shortcomings and finding opportunities to improve overall environmental performance
  • Ensuring that all assets and operations are managed in a manner that is environmentally sound
  • Integrating environmental considerations into planning and decision-making
  • Continuously striving to improve its environmental performance.  

To meet this commitment, BC Transit:

  • Works with municipalities and stakeholders to limit environmental impacts;  
  • Seeks financially and technologically viable solutions that reduce environmental impacts of operations;
  • Includes the environment as a factor in business decisions.

Some examples of this commitment include:

  • Implementing hybrid bus technology;
  • The use of biodiesel;  
  • The recycling of water used in bus wash operations;  
  • Installation of a wastewater treatment facility in the Victoria Region;
  • Upgrade of materials recycling program to include a wider variety of wastes;
  • Improving stormwater quality prior to discharge from facilities; 
  • Ensuring new vehicles are equipped with low emission technology; 
  • Investigation of emissions reducing technology to retrofit existing vehicles
