Corporate/Professional
There are several administrative support positions in most departments at BC Transit. Administrative Support positions require considerable office experience, plus strong skills in word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
Business Development
The marketing department is in charge of creating marketing campaigns, collateral, and advertisements for BC Transit and its systems across the province. Brand integrity is one of the many roles that the graphic designers fulfill.
Customer Information
Working on a shift basis, Customer Information Agents (CIA’s) use computerized information to respond to public inquiries concerning transit service, schedules, routing, nearest departure points, fares, passes, BC Transit policies as well as receiving complaints and commendations. As this is an entry-level position, CIA’s will usually start in casual positions but can quickly progress to regular positions within the company. CIA’s bring to the job solid customer service experience, a quick mind, a keen eye for detail and flexibility to be available for a variety of shifts.
Engineering
Fleet Engineers at BC Transit provide transportation engineering expertise in a wide range of projects and activities related to fleet management, including management of the Engineering Co-op program, assisting with the Provincial Fleet Plan and vehicle acquisition program along with the development of the fleet portion of the Corporate Capital Plan. A degree in Mechanical Engineering is required and one (1) year of related experience in the mechanical engineering field. Eligibility for registration as Engineer-in-training with the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of B.C. (APEGBC) (as pre-requisite to gain Professional Engineer designation).
Finance and Accounting
A wide range of positions such as Business Analysts, Capital Programs, Accounting Staff, Payroll Administrators, Farebox and Revenue Accounting staff work within the Finance Division. We hire experienced and qualified external applicants as well as offering opportunities for internal advancement. Qualifications for accounting positions vary and depend upon the level of work to be performed, but will require previous accounting experience and usually post-secondary education in a related field.
Human Resources
Like many other organizations, BC Transit is facing recruiting challenges due to the competitive job market and ageing workforce. Human Resources staff need to have demonstrated strategic, generalist and recruitment skills in order to engage, attract and retain employees as well as flexibility to adjust to emerging priorities. Human Resources roles include Human Resources Advisors, Labour Relations Advisor, HRIS Specialist, Benefits Specialist and Recruitment Clerks.
Information Technology
The BC Transit IT department consists of a Senior Systems Database Analyst, System Analyst, Systems Administrator and Technical Support Assistant. They are technically proficient, skilled in a number of database and software platforms, customer focused and work hard to ensure BC Transit operating systems and software applications are compatible and up-to-date.
Planning and Scheduling
Planners work in our Operations Division serving Municipal Systems and Victoria Regional Transit service. Planners are involved in long range transportation planning, feasibility studies, and routing and scheduling of transit services throughout the province. Planner positions typically require a related university degree and experience in transportation or urban planning.
Purchasing and Inventory Control
BC Transit Buyers purchase all the materials, parts and services for transit centres throughout the province and are responsible for researching and identifying supplier sources and costs, as well as ensuring suppliers deliver the goods or services as ordered. Applicants must hold or be working towards completion of the Purchasing Management Association Certificate, depending upon the position. They must also have prior experience in a computerized purchasing environment with skills in researching and obtaining quotations from suppliers. Stockroom staff maintain and control an inventory of materials for use by our maintenance shops. They are responsible for monitoring, ordering, receiving, unloading, verifying and storing stock shipments from suppliers and for performing inventory counts. Applicants require previous experience and training in inventory control in a computerized environment and need a strong commitment to accuracy, attention to detail and the ability to drive a forklift.
Safety, Security and Training
The Safety & Training Officers are responsible for developing and conducting training programs for Transit Operators, maintenance staff, and other BC Transit employees as well as ensuring all WorkSafe BC provisions and guidelines are complied with. Security personnel oversee and maintain the voice and data administration and access card control systems as well as develop BC Transit physical security operations strategies.
